Publisher's red cloth, front cover blocked and titled in gilt, spine lettered in gilt, white endpapers. Spine faded and gilt dull. Neatly closed split on upper joint. Two ink inscriptions on front free endpaper, one offset onto front pastedown. A good copy only. 12,500 copies were published on 15th November 1906 priced 6/-. Sir Nigel is a historical novel set during the early phase of the Hundred Years' War, spanning the years 1350 to 1356. It was first published in serial form during 1905-06. It is the background story to Doyle's earlier novel The White Company (1891), and describes the early life of that book's hero Nigel Loring, a knight in the service of King Edward III in the first phase of the Hundred Years' War. The character is loosely based on the historical knight Neil Loring. Arthur Twidle (1865-1936) was an English illustrator and artist best known for his illustrations of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes books. Green and Gibson A30a. .
