 - Mizue みづゑ, No. 754 [Periodical]

Title: Mizue みづゑ, No. 754 [Periodical]
Description: Mizue みづゑ, No. 754 [periodical] Bijutsu Shuppansha 美術出版社 Tokyo November, 1967 29.5 x 22.5cm magazine opens western style with glossy wrappers decorated with a reproduced artwork in fuschia and orange on the front cover and a Pam Am advertisement with an image of San Francisco on the rear. 88 pages. A Table of Contents and summaries of the 4 main articles, including one on the Gutai group, are all in English. This issue of the important art journal Mizue みづゑ is notable for an article on pp. 79-84 commemorating the 15th anniversary of the founding of the Gutai group, which has 15 black and white reproduced images of artworks, an ad and Japanese text. The images, some of works in situ, have the artist's name underneath. The 19th exhibit was held at the Tokyo Central Bijutsukan from Oct 1 -14, 1976. The article was written by Inui Yoshiaki 乾由明 (1927 - 2017), who was an art historian and critic as well as an emeritus professor at Kyoto University and Kanazawa College of Art and an emeritus director at the Museum of Ceramic Art. He edited a number of books on traditional and modern art and contributed numerous articles to art journals for forty years, from the 1960s to 1990s. Described on the rear cover as "A monthly review of the fine arts," Mizue みづゑ was established in 1905 as a periodical on watercolors, as suggested by the title - mizu: water, e: pictures. Started by watercolor painter Oeshita Tōjirō (1870-1911) as a monthly magazine to popularize his hobby, the magazine soon went on to incorporate many other types of art and continued being published for decades. The multiple large images of artwork in black and white and color, some as fold-outs, as well as scholarly articles that covered art across centuries, genres and nations, led to an art journal of visual sophistication. Toning to rear wrapper and pages, dust staining to rear wrapper, otherwise good condition overall. .
