Title: [Tokugawa Woodblock Print Map]. Tto 東都
Description: 1862. Nihonbashi Yori 日oe橋 oe橋ヨリ [Tokugawa woodblock print map]. Tōto 東都 (Edo/Tokyo). Bunkyu 2 [1862]. Color woodblock print map of Edo (Tokyo), oriented with North to the right. Originally published in Kaiei 2 [1849], this updated map was republished in 1862. Publisher is given as Yorozuya Seibe 萬屋oe助枚 with an address in Asakusa. This late Tokugawa period map chronicles a growing Edo when the Daimyō were establishing residences in the city, just a few years before this feudal landholding class was abolished. The vertical titles indicates that this is a map of residences (white areas on the map) of various Daimyo or noble families with their crests, with routes from Nihonbashi 日oe橋. The map has two titles: one vertical (諸御大各御屋鋪会印 御紋) and one horizontal (日oe橋ヨリ諸方江道法), read from right to left. "御大" is an abbreviation for General or, in this case, Daimyō. Major temples and shrines are labeled, as well as bridges and residences, and rice fields are noted. A bump-out piece has been added to extend the East section likely to accommodate the many changes to the growing metropolis into the bay. There is a legend with place names and a guide to distance. .
