An underlying theme of The Birds of Sorrow is the Zen Buddhist principle of non-violence, as told from the point of view of a recently-deceased hunter. This retelling is especially poignant given the time frame of its publication so close to the end of World War II. Original woodblock prints on wrappers, inside wrappers and title pages by Munakata Shikō 棟方志功 (1903 - 1975), one of the giants of mid-20th century Japanese printmaking and a leader of the Sōsaku Hanga 創oe版画 (Creative Print Movement).
