Ogata KÅrin 尾形å-‰ç³ - KåRin Manga å-‰ç³æ¼«ç”»

Title: KåRin Manga å-‰ç³æ¼«ç”»
Description: Ogata KÅrin 尾形å-‰ç³. KÅrin Manga å-‰ç³æ¼«ç”». c. 1890-95. Toshikawa Hanshichi, publisher. 2 vols 24 x 16cm bound fukuro toji with printed title slips. Vol 1 has 30 cho of monochrome woodblock prints plus 1 cho of introductory Japanese text preceding the prints and a 22 x 10cm title slip laid in. Vol 2 has 22 cho of monochrome woodblock prints with a final page of Japanese text and the colophon laid down on rear inside wrapper. Our research indicates that the publisher of the version in hand, Toshikawa Hanshichi of Tokyo, produced this reprinting mid to late Meiji (c. 1890-1895) from the original blocks. Interestingly enough, all copies of the Edo editions (1817) we have located, both the Erakuya and Kadomaruya editions, appear to consist of what represents volume 1 in our copy. Perhaps our volume 2 was first published in Meiji? Our Vol 1 complete, accords with Smithsonian copy, with our volume having an additional first page of calligraphed text. Ogata KÅrin 尾形å-‰ç³ [1661-1716] was best known for his designs and paintings, most often on screens and art objects. This 2 volume set was printed posthumously, 100 years after KÅrin's passing, by Sakai HÅitsu [1761-1828]. Unlike the expected realistic botanical woodcuts, this is more of an album with designs or sketches. A description of this edition is found in Bartlett and Shohara pp 225-6. Not in Mitchell. Wear to wrappers. .
