Heian Tōyō Jūnigetsu Jimbutsu Gazu 平安東陽十Oeoe人物画図. 29 cm. tall and about 684 cm long (over 20 feet). Shimizu Tōyō was a Shijō style Japanese painter who has captured the energy and fun of the holidays of the twelve months in Kyōto in this scroll. The handscroll was done and signed by him in Meiji 5 [1872], when he was in his early 30s; he would die at 45 in 1894. Born and raised under the old regime in Kyoto, he was a talented practitioner of its art. Also known under the names Yoshimasa 義質 and Sennosuke 扇之助, he studied under established artist Nakajima Kayo 中島華陽 (1813 - 1877) and mastered the traditional Shijō school subjects of people, flowers and birds. In a clean brocade cover with just a bit of creasing throughout. In what appears to be an original wooden box from the Meiji era. .
