Sewell, Cornhill, 1790. Pp. 8, [12], 281, [3], 11 folding plates: Book 1: I-III; Book 2: I-IV; Book 3: I-IV. Disbound: quarter dark brown morocco with marbled paper covered boards, lacking backstrip. Ex-library with usual markings. Lacks frontispiece; endpapers have been replaced. Blank leaf preceding title missing fore-edge, ink ownership (contemporary?) "Sam Gardner". Spine missing, boards ffep - page 6 and rfep detached. Page 8 and page 1 of Dedication repaired at gutter, tipped in. Binding copy, pages loose. Divided into three Books plus a Supplement: "Book I. is upon the efforts of the water to bend the vessel. -- Upon the means of giving to vessels a sufficient degree of stability. Book 2. on the resistance which vessels experience in their courses, and upon the action of the rudder. Book 3. Upon the masts, and of the management of the vessels. The Supplement is upon the action of oars." Watson was like Euler a gifted mathematician, and the biographical sketch at the beginning of this volume is copied from the European Magazine, December 1787. many equations and tables within the text, and plates contain multiple figures illustrating proportion and formulas for naval architecture.
