CULVERWELL, Robert James - Porneiopathology: A Popular Treatise on Venereal and Other Diseases

Title: Porneiopathology: A Popular Treatise on Venereal and Other Diseases
Description: 1844. CULVERWELL, R. J. PORNEIOPATHOLOGY: A POPULAR TREATISE ON VENEREAL AND OTHER DISEASES OF THE MALE AND FEMALE GENITAL SYSTEM; WITH REMARKS ON IMPOTENCE, ONANISM, STERILITY, PILES, AND GRAVEL, AND PRESCRIPTIONS FOR THEIR TREATMENT. New York: J. S. Redfield, 1844. Probable first American edition. (The bibliographic record of Culverwell's several treatises on sexual hygiene, behavior, disorders, etc. is very confused. Part of the reason lies in the possibility that completely different works may have been published under the same title on occasion. -- Atwater 1, 1, pp. 237-238.) Title-page says illustrated "with one hundred plates" but the reality is many small (creepy) wood-engraved text illustrations. 215 pp. 12mo. bound in publisher's brown cloth with gilt-stamped title on upper board and spine. Ex library, with spine label and an ink stamp on front pastedown and on the title-page. Heavy foxing throughout. Large chip missing from front flyleaf. This popular treatise, published by J. S. Redfield -- Edgar Allen Poe's chief publisher, was written for "the young and the thoughtless," explaining "the structure and anatomy of the parts primarily affected by venereal disease, and describing its first as well as its subsequent and aggravated symptoms, and pointing out the safest treatment of it in experienced hands." It is a scarce title, offered as is. (Atwater Collection 1, no. 848, and a note in 3, no. S-702.). .
