Description: [BURDON, William, attr.] THE QUESTION, WHY DO WE GO TO WAR? TEMPERATELY DISCUSSED, ACCORDING TO THE OFFICIAL CORRESPONDENCE. Second Edition. London: Printed for J. Wallis, no. 46, Paternoster-Row, 1803. Bound with: THE REASON WHY. IN ANSWER TO A PAMPHLET ENTITLED "WHY DO WE GO TO WAR?" London: Printed for John Stockdale, Piccadilly, 1803. Two octavo pamphlets: [2],30;66 pp. Modern binding of quarter morocco and marbled boards, with gilt-stamped spine title. Occasional foxing to text leaves. The top page of each title is a bit soiled; and, the t.p. for "Why do we go to war?" has an expert paper repair near the bottom edge. Although rightly bound together, the order of the pamphlets should be reversed. "The reason why" was written and published in respone to the first edition of "Why do we go to war?," which examined the extent to which England should be involved in the Napoleanic wars. According to the author's preface, the second edition of "Why do we go to war?" was required to answer the "liberal insinuation and incivility of language, suggesting the accusation of disloyalty, friendship to France, &c." in "The reason why." Very good copies of the pamphlets, in a handsome binding. .
