Title: Dictionary Polygraphicum: Or, the Whole Body of Arts Regularly Digeste
Description: 1758. BARROW, J[ohn]. DICTIONARY POLYGRAPHICUM: OR, THE WHOLE BODY OF ARTS REGULARLY DIGESTED. London: Printed for C. Hitch and L. Hawes, et al. 1758. Second edition, corrected and improved. In two octavo volumes: [8],432;[2],398 pp. Fifty-five (of 69?) engraved plates; frontispiece in vol. 1 and 54 folding plates. (The title-page mentions 69 plates; however, no plate list is included.) Contemporary calf sides, scuffed and scratched on surfaces, and edgeworn; professionally rebacked in calf with a morocco spine label. A few leaves at the end of vol. 1 and a few leaves at the beginning of vol. 2 are lightly wormed. Despite a few pencil notes and a few instances of light foxing, text and plates are really quite clean. A sound and very good copy of this compendium of materials and techniques used in fine and applied arts. It includes sections on drawing and painting, sculpture and print-making, stained glass, dying (assorted materials, such as cloth, leather, ivory, etc.) and bleaching, tapestry weaving, and pyrotechny (fireworks). .
