First edition, second printing, identified by the 1837 title-page date and volume designation at the foot of first page of each signature. Wood-engraved illustrations and maps, some of which have traces of juvenile, but careful, hand-coloring. [i]-xii,[13]-374,[375-376] pp.; the final leaf is a blank. Octavo. Brown cloth embossed with a floral pattern, gilt-stamped lyre (signed B. Bradley) within an ornate blind-stamped frame on each cover, gilt-stamped title and figure to spine, yellow endpapers. Contemporary gift inscription in pencil on ffep. The binding is sunned at spine and perimeters of boards, with wear at heel and crown; top joint and hinge are starting. Text leaves are moderately foxed, occasionally soiled, and a few signatures are partially sprung. One leaf is creased ith a short edge-tear. A worn copy of Volume 2 - only, of a scarce Hawthorne title. (Clark A3.1.b). .
