In all, thirteen octavo volumes uniformly bound: light brown calf, red and black labels and gilt decoration at spine, gilt-stamped double-rule border to sides, marbled endpapers, with all edges marbled to match. Bookplate at front pastedown of each volume. Several volumes of the History have maps at the end, many are folding. Some of the maps show light foxing, but the set is quite clean and fresh overall. The spines have darkened and the gilt has dulled. A solid set, though most volumes show some occasional, superficial rubbing at edges and/or joints. Vol. I has one joint just starting. Vol. 8 has a chip in one label. Nonetheless it a handsome, near-fine set of Grote's popular history. .
