Macintosh initially asked Professor Elkin to accept him as a candidate for the post-graduate Diploma in Anthropology. They became friends which lasted until Macintosh's death, 33 years later. (Initially published over 3 issues of the journal 'Archaeology and Physical Anthropology in Oceania', and here reprinted as one volume.).
