Lady Gwendolen Cecil found the diary among the papers of her father, and arranged to have this copy printed. Introduction and notes by Ernest Scott. The illustrations are from drawings by S. T. Gill, except those of the Chief Commissioner's camp at Castlemaine (Mount Alexander), and the junction of Pegleg and Sailor’s Gully, which are from drawings by C. Rudson Read.
