Title: Yirawala: Painter of the Dreaming.
Description: Sydney, Rydalmere Hodder & Stoughton, 1992. 1st ed. Hardback quarto, dustjacket, very good condition (in very good dustjacket), black & white text-photos, colour plates, minor edgewear jacket (spine ends little rubbed, slight loss gilt title on spine, black background little rubbed). Heavy (1.2 Kg), and extra postage may be requested to destinations outside Australia. 160 pp. A biography about a great traditional painter and elder of the Gunwinggu [now Kunwinjku] tribe, Arnhem Land, Northern Territory. This is also the story of Yirawala's faithful friend, Sandra Holmes, who has spent her lifetime trying to bridge the gap between Black and White Australia. The ceremonial paintings of Yirawala (1894 - 1976) - ceremony leader, law carrier, medicine man and healer of the Gunwinggu tribe - are sought by museums all over the world. In 1971 he received an MBE for services to Aboriginal art. Contains, for the first time, colour plates and explanations of the entire ceremonial series of 139 paintings collected by Sandra (now in the Australian National Gallery, Canberra). Yirawala asked Sandra to write this book so that everyone would understand the relationship between ceremonial painting and Aboriginal religion and law. Also records Yirawala's fight to protect his tribal lands. ISBN: 0646148834
