Robert Burford painted his map for an exhibition in London, based on a map prepared by Augustus Earle in Sydney two years earlier. Burford exhibited numerous panoramas of places of interest worldwide to large audiences in London. This map of Sydney is a valuable early record of the layout of Sydney Town.
