He joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB), a Fenian organization in Ireland. He organised arms smuggling to Ireland, but was arrested and imprisoned by the English, but was released on a ticket-of-leave after serving seven years. He rejoined the IRB, where he held that the common people of Ireland could not improve their lot without ownership of their land. [No date, but 1882 (latest internal date) or later, up to 1920. Originally edition published 1876 by Cameron & Ferguson, Glasgow.]
