The story of a romance between a young South African man of mixed race and a white girl. The author "was born in 1919 in the Negro slums of Johannesburg, South Africa. At the age of nine he went to work in a tinsmithy. He taught himself to read and write and during intervals between work went to school." [dw] In 1939, he signed on a ship as a stoker, hoping to get to England, where he finally arrived in 1941, and where this book was written. Good .
