A form letter on Webendorfer-Wills Co. Inc.'s stationery, dated May 5, 1941, is attached to the magazine with an old paper clip. The letter proclaims this to be the "World's Only Plane-Delivered Magazine Lithographed on ATF-Webendorfer Rotary Offset Press! The firm's original orange postcard, requesting the names and addresses of those seeking further information, is also attached.
This is the first magazine to be delivered by air express. The editorial content was identical with the New York edition, but the advertising was not. It began as a Latin-American edition, in English, with a $10 yearly subscription price. The total edition was of 20,000 copies. Prior to this issue, the average cost of an airmail subscription to Time in South America had been $272 a year. With this May 5th, 1941 issue, the first to be regularly delivered by plane, Time reached Latin American readers as far South as Buenos Aires by the Monday date of publication. To make this affordable, the Air Express Edition was printed on a special lightweight paper on specially designed presses and Time magazine sought and gained the cooperation of Pan American Airways. Very good.
