Description: Washington, D.C.: circa [1949]. [1949]. Washington, D.C.: circa [1949]. [1949]. Very good. - An original black and white photograph measuring approximately 10 inches high by 13 inches wide depicting Harry S. Truman's Correspondence Secretary William D. Hassett, his Appointments Secretary Matthew J. Connelly and Press Secretary Charles G. Ross posing beneath a photograph of President Truman. Mounted, apparently with glue, into its original 20 inch high by 16 inch wide creamy buff mat, the photograph is signed on the mat under the portrait by President Harry S. Truman as well as by the three men William D. Hassett, Matthew J. Connelly, and Charles G. Ross. The photograph is additionally signed in pencil by the pioneering woman photographer Jackie Martin, the first official photographer for the WAACs and first female member of the White House News Photographers Association. The photograph is lightly wrinkled and the mat is very slightly soiled. An otherwise bold image with clear clean signatures in very good condition.

The first official photographer for the WAAC, America's first female army, Jackie Martin (1903-1969) first applied for membership in the White House News Photographers Association in 1929. It was not until she applied again in 1941 that she was accepted, becoming the first female member of the White House News Photographers Association in 1942. Having broken through this glass ceiling, the association would boast 5 female members by the end of 1945. An important figure in the early years of American journalism, she worked as the women's sports editor for the Washington Times from 1923 to 1926, and was the society editor for Underwood & Underwood in 1925 & 1926 where she learned her craft as a photographer. In 1926, she became a member of the combined photo staff for Hearst Papers, the Washington Times and Washington Herald. An amateur athlete, she was injured in the tryouts for the Olympic half-mile race. In addition to numerous prestigious newspaper positions, she was the unofficial press attache to the first woman minister to a foreign land, Ruth Bryan Owen. She established the photo department for the Chicago Sun's Washington Bureau and served as an expert consultant to the Secretary of War in 1942, becoming the first official photographer for the WAACs. In that same year, she became the first female member of the White House News Photographers Association. In 1944, she served as a War Correspondent in Italy and France, for which she received the War Department's Certificate of Merit and the Theater Ribbon for war correspondence. Stationed in Paris, she served as Chief of an 18-country photo operation for the Marshall Plan undertaken by the U.S. Foreign Service department. From 1955 to 1957, she planned and organized the world-wide display of Edward Steichen's "Family of Man" Exhibit in Washington, D.C. Jackie Martin authored several books throughout her career, including "Jackie in Movieland", "Frontier By Air", and "Brazil: Giant to the South" and left unpublished manuscripts for "The Nurses: World War II" and "Nurses in Action"/"Oh Medic!". Very good .
