Title: 2 Sheets of Original 19th Century Finished Graphite Pencil Drawings, Possibly Intended to Illustrate Children's Stories
Description: 1862. 1862. 1862. 1862. Fair. - sc - Seventeen original graphite pencil drawings executed on two 14-1/4 inch high by 10-1/4 inch wide sheets of buff art paper. Each well-executed drawing is a finished illustration within pencil drawn frames laid out on the sheets as if they were cards. One of the drawings is initialed "N.A.W." and dated "1862". On one sheet, a central drawing appears to be a version of "Struwwelpeter" with a large demonic head on a thinner tree- like body. Eight drawings are laid out, as if cards, surrounding this central drawing. Among them is a child, looking much like a young Napoleon, seated on a wooden horse with a crop in his hand. Another drawing, this one a play on words titled "A soldier pitching his tent", depicts a soldier with a large brush and pitch bucket painting his tent with the resin. A grumpy cat in human attire is titled "An Unprotected Cabbie" and a man pushing his top hat down on his head proclaims "I despise everybody!!!". On the other sheet, a woman selling what might be cookies, sits at her table set up on a street, smoking a corn-cob pipe. A wide-brimmed hat extends to cover the table. This drawing is centered between seven others laid out in a pattern around it. One of these drawings portrays a pleasant smiling woman whose wide-brimmed hat shields her diminutive husband, children & dog. Keeping with the same theme, a third of these drawings illustrates a young girl whose wide-brimmed hat serves as the table for her parents who are enjoying English tea. The paper is soiled and darkened with staining along the left edge of one sheet. The top edge of that sheet is chipped with small pieces out which do not affect the drawings. The top right corner of the other sheet is creased with a small piece out, again not affecting the drawing. There are some creases to the edges. Fair .
