"Nr. 4000" handwritten in red ink on the title. Each of the first 10,000 copies was numbered thus by the publishers.

Bound in is the scarce printed pink slip offering a cash prize of $1,000 "to be paid to the person or persons who correctly guess the name of the author of The Buntling Ball." This slip is also numbered 4000, matching the number on the title page. Good .
