Title: Report of the Executive Committee of the New England Society for the Suppression of Vice
Description: Boston, MA, 1882. 1st printing.8vo,,An original four-page printed report with printed insert,The New England Society for the Suppression of Vice (NESSV) was founded in Boston in 1878 by a group of Boston residents following a speech given by Anthony Comstock (who founded a similar society in New York in 1873). The NESSV was mainly concerned with the censorship or banning (hence the term 'Banned in Boston') of books and public performances which are deemed by the Society to be unsuitable for the public. Their mission statement declares that the Society exists for 'the suppression of all agencies tending to corrupt the morals of youth. We do this by the most effective means - moral or legal.' The NESSV subsequently changed is name to the 'New England Watch and Ward Society', and then again, in 1957, to the 'New England Citizens Crime Commission'. It ceased to function in 1975. Our offering is a rare original copy of one of the Society's earliest reports, printed less than four years after the NESSV was formed. In it, Frederick Baylies Allen, the Society's Secretary, sets out the accomplishments of the Society for the past year (some of which are quite remarkable, especially to those of us engaged in the trade of selling books). The Secretary's Report is followed by a financial statement, and then a list of officers and committee members. The insert contains a solicitation for financial donations to the NESSV. WorldCat reports one holding (Harvard) of a document bearing this title, but it is not clear whether it is an annual report, and in any event, in which form (original, microfiche, e-book, etc.) it is being held. Outside pages soiled, esp. at margins. A few creases. Insert sl. worn. Overall, both documents in good, or better, condition.
