It was founded by Dodsley and first appeared in 1758 under the editorship of Edmund Burke. The first volume appeared on May 15, 1759, and it has been published continuously since that date. Matthew Prior described it as 'the best and most comprehensive of all the periodical works, without any admixture of their trash, or any tediousness of detail.' Our copy is divided into 12 parts, in this order: 'The History of Europe', pp. 1-230; 'The Chronicle', pp. 1-59; 'Appendix to the Chronicle' pp. 60-135; expenses of Parliament, births for the year 1773, as well as marriages, deaths, principal promotions, etc.); 'State Papers', pp. 136-304 (with Supplement, pp. 221-233); 'Characters', (brief biographies of famous personages of the time) pp. 1-58; 'Natural History', pp. 59-84; 'Useful Projects', pp. 85-109; 'Antiquities', pp. 110-126; 'Miscellaneous Essays', pp. 127-144; 'Poetry', pp. 145-161 (works by Peter Pindar, William Roscoe and others); 'Account of Books for 1773', pp. 162-186', 'The Contents' (unpaginated - a table of contents). The paper spine label is chipped, the boards are rubbed at the corners, and they show some soiling. The binding is tight. Occasional marginal soiling, else contents otherwise clean and tight. A good plus copy. .
