Title: The Drag-Net a Prison Story of the Present Day
Description: Boston, MA, C. M. Clark Publishing Co. 1909. 1st edition. Hardcover. pp. 332.8vo,,,Elizabeth Baker Bohan was born in England and emigrated to the U.S. in 1854. She was educated in Milwaukee and, for a time, taught public school there before she married M. Bohan in 1872, who was then the editor of the Fond du Lac 'Journal'. This is one of her last novels, and carries the printed dedication: 'To the Unfortunates who have Suffered Injury by Reason of the Unchristian Administration of our Penal Institutions'. It is unsual for a woman of her era to write a novel about prison conditions. Our copy is bound in forest green cloth with gilt lettering and a (drag) net design blocked to the front board and spine. The binding shows wear. The hinges are cracked but holding. Former owner's names in pencil to front free endpaper. A few instances of marginal foxing. All six plates present. Overall, a fair to good copy of the original book in its original binding. Although available as one of those dreadful e-books, original copies are now rarely seen. Ill.: black-&-white illustrations.
