Title: The Spectator; with a Biographical and Critical Preface, and Explanatory Notes / in Four Volumes
Description: London, Routledge, Warne, et al, 1860.12mo,,Complete four volume set nicely bound in 3/4 leather,Each 'paper' or 'number' was approximately 2,500 words long, and the original run of 'The Spectator' consisted of 555 numbers. In the first edition, these were collected into seven volumes. The paper was revised, without the involment of Steele, in 1714, appearing thrice weekly for six months, and these papers when collected formed the eigth volume. (Wikipedia). It is observed in the Preface in volume I of our offering that 'Of all the works that have been written in the English language, the series of Essays under the title 'The Spectator' has undoubtedly had the greatest influence in reforming the manners, and correcting the vices of the English people.' The extremities of each volume are rubbed, and the marbled paper of the boards shows some scuffing. Notwithstanding the bindings are tight and the contents are exceptionally bright and unmarked. The set, as a whole, looks quite pleasing on the shelf. 'The Spectator' was a daily publication issued in London from 1711 to 1712 by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele.
