It was a popular destination in the 19th century for those wishing to visit a spa and 'take the waters'. One view, for example, shows patrons in the dining room of 'Mr. Smedley's Hydropathic Establishment.'. Ill.: twelve engravings. An unpaginated album of engraved views of the spa and village at Matlock; the engravings being dated between 1859 and 1869.
