Title: The Journal of James Boswell 1779-1781 / David Boswell's Return to Scotland June 1780 / Jaunt to London Spring 1781 / Letters
Description: [Privately printed], 1932. Hardcover. pp. vii, 275.Larger 4to,,,'Private Papers of James Boswell from Malahide Castle' - the first publication of Boswell's private papers, which had, since Boswell's death in 1785, lain locked in a cabinet sequestered in the estate of Lord Talbot de Malahide, until the copyright to them was acquired by Lieut. Col. Isham, 'as a result of which this long-shut gateway into the eighteenth century was finally unlocked'. Prepared for the press by Geoffrey Scott and Frederick A. Pootle, whose 'duty has here been confined (except in Vol. VI) to establish the text and chronology of the documents; to classify them with a view to the special character of this edition; and to provide some brief explanatory prefaces.' The printer was William Edwin Rudge. After printing, the type was distributed. This is volume XIV of an eighteen volume set, and continues Boswell's Dutch tour (related in volume II) commencing in June 4, 1764, and concluding on November 21, 1764. An extensive Introduction precedes the narrative. The book is bound in red paper over boards, with a paper spine label. The spine is sunned and lightly stained at the bottom edge, but the boards are otherwise tight and clean, and in very good condition. Internally, this volume is in excellent condition, with uncut pages (hence, never read). (We have other volumes available in this very scarce set). Ill.: handwriting facsimiles. The book designed by Bruce Rogers and printed in a limited edition of 570 copies, of which this is Number 71.
