BRUMUND, Jan Frederik Gerrit. - Het volksonderwijs onder de Javanen.

Title: Het volksonderwijs onder de Javanen.
Description: Batavia, Van Haren Noman & Kolff, 1857.Original marbled boards (spine sl. dam.). XII,198 pp.First edition; price answer published by the Maatschappij: Tot nut van't algemeen in Oostindië. - Jan Frederik Gerrit Brumund (1814-1863), a protestant minister in Batavia, maintained that even though it was a highly desirable thing to propagate Dutch as the language of the ruling country throughout the archipelago, all attemps to do so in the past had failed. Introducing Dutch would only lead to its bastardization under the dominant influence of Malay, as had already happened among the Indos. Thus he believed it would be much better to use Malay as the official language in all those regions where more highly developed Indigenous languages such as Javanese or Sundanese were not spoken. In Java Dutch would never be able to replace a sophisticated language like Javanese, which was intricately bound up with the people's own customs, ideas, and culture (Groeneboer, Gateway to the West, pp.110-111). - Scarce.Van der Chijs p. 121; Cat. KITLV p.100.
