XXIII,424 pp.First edition; with bookplate of Newport Public Libraries. - John Anderson (1795-1845) was a Scottish colonial civil servant, writter and traveller. He received an appointment to the civil service of the East India Company in 1813, and is first encountered as a 'writter' at the British colony of Penang, in Malaya, then known as Prince of Wales Island. He subsequently served as deputy warehouse-keeper and Malay translator, and in 1821 was promoted to the rank of factor. In February and March 1823 he acted as agent for the governor of Penang in 'procuring engagements' from the sultans of Delly and Siack, and the rajah of Langkat, in Sumatra. He was also despatched to Perak and Selangor, where he successfully concluded a treaty with Sultan Ibrahim of Selangor (Howgego p.6).
