London 1868. - The American professor in natural history Bickmore (1839-1914), sponsored by the Boston Society of Natural History, arrived in 1865 in Indonesia to study the natural history. Besides the flora and fauna he also devoted a great deal of attention to the physical geography and the population. The concept of a Western and Eastern division between the Indonesian peoples was initiated by him. Batavia, Semarang, Surabaya, Celebes, the Moluccas, Sumatra and Singapore were visited.
