Hooyer. 496 pp.First edition. -- Wouter Cool (1848- 1928 ) was a Dutch minister and officer.The first part mainly contains a historical and ethnographical description of Lombok, also in relation to Bali. The second part deals with the so-called first- and second Lombok-expedition in 1894. The Dutch intervention in Lombok and Karangasem led to complete colonization of both Bali and Lombok by the early 20th century. The Dutch sought closer control to suppress opium trading and slavery. An extensive part is dealing with the Sasak-people. The illustrations were made by Gijsbert Brand Hooijer (1848 - 1934) a military man, draughtsman, illustrator and graphic artist (Haks & Maris, Lexicon of foreign artists who visualized Indonesia, p.128). - (Some foxing and annotations).Cat.
