[CRAIG, WILLIAM MARSHALL] - Description of the Plates Representing the Itinerant Traders of London in Their Ordinary Costume with Remarkable Places Given in the Background

Title: Description of the Plates Representing the Itinerant Traders of London in Their Ordinary Costume with Remarkable Places Given in the Background
Description: London: [Richard Phillips], [1805]. Second Issue. Blue gilt-edged hardback leather cover. 270mm x 220mm (11" x 9"). [64pp.]. Thirty hand-coloured plates (one plate 'Sand 'O' replicated). From a loosely laid-in appendix of a similar volume (photocopy incuded with this volume) we know this collated volume of thirty one plates to be a second volume running from plate 24 - 54. This edition lacks two plates: 'Lavender' and 'Soot O'!' Loosely laid-in is a duplicate handcoloured plate of 'Sand O'' Each plate accompanied by leaf of descriptive letterpress describing the cry and trade in the body of the text and, in the footnote, the London building in the background of the scene. Originally issued to accompany R. Phillips's Modern London, being the history and present state of the British metropolis. This is apparently a reissue, under separate cover, of the plates with their descriptive letterpress which were published with the 1805 edition of Modern London. Plates do not bear imprint as is found in 1804 edition [COPAC].. G : in good condition without dust jacket. Modern rebind with moire silk endpapers and gauffered edges. Some browning and off-setting from plates. Five plates with professionally repaired tears. Occasional light marking. Lacking two plates - one plate however is duplicated and loosely laid-in .
