Bonnard, Brian - Channel Island Plant Lore

Title: Channel Island Plant Lore
Description: Guernsey Press Co. Ltd. Guernsey, Channel Islands, 1993. First Edition, Softcover. Near Fine Condition. 9780902550520 The principal islands of Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, and Sark, each have a common nucleus of plant lore and legend, with some variation in customs between them. The several variations of the ancient Norman-French language formerly spoken in the separate islands, and indeed between parishes in the two larger islands, are still in use by a small section of the population in Jersey, Guernsey and Sark. The names of common plants in these languages have in many cases been recorded and thus preserved. In Alderney where it was already much reduced since the 1800s through the influence of British garrisons, the local dialect finally died out with the almost total evacuation of the population in 1940, and virtually no written records of it exist. The plant names are sometimes, but not always, directly related to the modern French name for the plant and are often at total variance with any translation of the English common name, perhaps instead describing their appearance, or local use. The names often show a considerable variation between the islands. The same name is sometimes used for more than one plant, or there may be several similar names with different spelling for the same plant, due to differences in pronunciation between the islands or even between parishes within the islands. Plants commonly used for domestic or medicinal purposes, as love charms, or to ward off evil, figure large in these lists, and others have given their names to areas or fields where they grow, or used to grow, or to houses or roads built on these sites. There was a general belief in the islands that swearing at young plants, especially as they were being planted out, encouraged them to grow. Naturally many of the herbal uses, and old folk-remedies will be found to be similar to those current in Britain at the same period. Where this is so, it has not been recorded specifically, but some few may be unique to the islands. Many of the local customs involving plants however, are unique in the British Isles.
