His five war sonnets caught the spirit of the times with a country yet to feel the full impact of the devastation that war would bring. Brooke’s sonnet ‘The Soldier’ is one of the most famous war poems ever written. This collection of poetry outsold most others of the time, reaching an incredible 24th reprint by 1918. Brooke was once described as ‘the handsomest young man in England’ by the poet W B Yeats.
