The photographers whose work is represented include local men such as F. ]. Smith of Cottenham and J. R. Cooper of Burwell, national celebrities like Francis Frith, and - typically, in what is so often an anonymous art - many more whose names have not been preserved. Anonymous or otherwise, the work of these photographers is often of an aesthetic quality which is as striking as the people and events they depict. F. A. Reeve's long years of residence in Cambridge, and his standing as a local historian, pre-eminentlv qualify him to write the Introduction and picture commentaries to a book which makes a distinctive contribution to the social history of Cambridgeshire in the period from the 1850s to the First World War.
