'Strawberry', says the author at the very beginning 'was a character.' He goes on to demonstrate why in a succession of rollicking stories in which are sketched other 'character' portraits, conveying (as the foreword says) 'in outline the sturdy independence and rugged wit they all possessed and in colouring the great fun they had.' The book is completed by a couple of haunting short stories, the themes of which are more worldly than the 'doins' of Strawberry.
