Title: The Red, White and Blue
Description: London & New York, Thomas Nelson and Sons. 1900, First & Only Edition?. Landscape-style hardback, 320mm x 253mm tall (12.75" x 10" approx.). 24pp + double-folding [double leaf-sized] colour frontispiece of the Royal Yacht on the occasion of the Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee Naval Review in 1897, with surrounding verse; b/w photo-illustrated title-page with verse; b/w plate with a painting of four children in a small sailing boat, by John H Bacon (?); 10 further colour-plates from paintings by various maritime artists, of a) the Pleasure Steamer 'La Marguerite', 'Whaling', A Peninsular & Oriental steamship leaving the Thames en-route to Australia captioned 'The Greyhound of the Seas'; 'The Powerful' in Durban Bay during the Boer War with verse entitled "The 'Handy' Men"; A ship in danger of imminent attack by a torpedo-boat and cruiser; Nelson's 'Victory'; 'The Trawler'; 'Sailing in the Bay'; 'A Brig Towed into Port', & 'A Full-Rigged Ship', each colour-plate accompanied by a description or verse printed in blue, Plus 21 further illustrations in the text in b/w or line, including a small Caldecott drawing. Undated, but circa 1900. Good, in the original colour-illustrated, cream paper-covered boards/red cloth spine, and with Thomas Nelson & Sons green-printed logo (upside-down) on rear board. An uncommon and wonderfully 'gung-ho' production, seemingly designed to convince British youngsters to go to sea, and to impress upon them that a cabin-boy might rise to become an Admiral of the Fleet.
