Description: London, Williams & Norgate Ltd. 1881, First Edition. Cloth, Lge 8vo. The first four volumes [of the eight volume First Edition]. Hardbacks, each 150mmx 235mm tall (6" x 9.25" approx.). with a 20pp Preface, Systemic Index and a Corrigenda, plus a total of 622 multi-image colour plates, interleaved with tissue-guards, each plate neatly numbered to the upper blank margin to accord with the Index secondary details. Neat cancelled Polish University College Library of London stamp impression to the blank lower margins of the title-leaves and some spotting of prelims. The gutta-percha in the bindings has failed, as usual, leaving the plate leaves loose. One plate creased with a tiny repaired clean marginal tear, otherwise all very good. These volumes all first editions, published between 1881 and 1886. The original green cloth-covered bevelled-edge boards/gilt spine rulings, titles & decoration, with logo and rulings in blind to boards, are very good. Exceptionally scarce.
