[ Indicating this edition to be the first publication of any book on dialling to be published after the 1752 calendar changes, which resulted in the 'Give us back our eleven days' riots. Title continues: "The Whole laid down after so plain a method, that any Person (tho' a Stranger to the Art) With a Pair of Compasses and a Common Ruler only, May make a Dial upon any Plane for any Place in the World, as well as those who have attained to the greatest Knowledge and Perfection in the Mathematics. Illustrated with many Copper Plates, And Examples of Dials, for London, Exeter, Bristol, Worcester, Oxford, Cambridge, Norwich, Lincoln, Chester, Liverpool, York, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Durham, Edinburgh, Dublin, &c. To which are added, 1. A collection of above 300 Mottos in Latin and English. 2. A New and Correct Alphabetical Table of the most eminent Cities and Towns in the whole World; shewing the Elevation of the Pole, and the Difference of the Meridian from London. 3. The best and most approved Methods of Painting Sun-Dials. A work not only useful for Artificers, but very entertaining for Gentlemen, and those Students at the Universities, that would understand Dialling, without the Fatigue of going through a Corse of Mathematics. -- A New Edition: not only very much improved by the Addition of the New Star-Dial, &c. but it is the only Book upon the Subject that has been adapted to the New Stile (sic) .".
