The missions of the Dominican Order of Preachers were fostered, on the one hand, by the Portuguese conquests in Africa and the East Indies and, on the other, by the Spanish conquests in America. Dominican evangelization went from America to the Philippines (1586) and thence to China (1590); the Preachers established themselves in Japan (1601) and in Tonking (present day Vietnam) in 1676.e
