Modern quarter black goatskin, marbled paper-covered boards; new new endpapers and flyleaves; armorial bookplate of Harold Hulme Brindley, M.A., F.S.A. put back. Pages yellowed and with occasional spotting and discolouration; dark brown-edged leaves; neat, minor paper repairs at top outer corner of title-page and at lower outer corner of pages 33-34. Final two unnumbered pages are advertisements for books printed by J. Batley. **** The hero of a number of important naval expeditions, the French commander René DuGuay-Trouin's most famous victory was the capture of Rio de Janeiro in 1711. Two English translations of the French original are recorded in ESTC: London: printed for J. Batley, 1732 (ESTC t110049) and London: printed for Jacob Robinson, 1743 (ESTC N68849) - the latter giving the name of the translator as George Shelvocke. This 1740 edition is unrecorded in ESTC.
