Binding: 18th-century half calf, marbled paper-covered boards; gilt spine. ***** The first item contains regulations for the customs house at Porto - one of the Portuguese Crown's most important sources of revenue. Included are procedures for escorting ships into harbour, inspecting and unloading merchandise, confiscating hidden goods, duty-free preferences for the property of nobles, clergy and students of the University of Coimbra. Provisions for ships from Brazil are set out on pp. 47-50, with notes on the Brazilian sugar trade on pp. 54-55 and departures for Brazil on pp. 99-100. Provisions for ships carrying slaves from Cabo Verde, S‹o Thomé, Guinea, Angola and the Casa da India are set out on pp. 53-54.
