Description: Lisboa: na Offic. de Ignacio Nogueira Xisto, 1762. 4to. [12], 424p. At head of title: 'Viva Jesus'. Slight worming in inner margin of a few gatherings, not affecting text. Contemporary mottled calf, chipped at head of spine; worn at front joint and at corners. Ownership stamp at foot of title "The Library of Franciscan Fathers Avalon P[ennsylvani]A". This is the second volume only of a set of two. ***** Fonseca (1631-1682) led an adventurous life: he was a soldier, killed a man in a duel, went to Brazil, where he distinguished himself in the service of the Crown. After his return to Portugal he entered the Franciscan Convent in Evora and became a writer. 'It is as a prose writer, especially in his Cartas Espirituaes that he holds a foremost place in Portuguese literature. His prose possesses so persuasive, so passionate an energy, and it is of so clear a fervor and harmony that its eloquence is felt to be genuine.' - Bell. Cat. Azevedo-Samodaes 719: 'Classico. Apreciado. Rara.'
