Red morocco, gold-tooled binding signed by Emile Rousselle; marbled endpapers; gilt-edged leaves; red, green and yellow silk bookmark. **** The Treaty of Madrid signed 5 November 1630, which ended the war between England and Spain begun in 1625 as a result of a dispute between Charles I and Philip IV over the Palatinate. The war began badly for England with a disastrous naval expedition to Cadiz. Peace negotiations started in 1629 when Charles received the painter, Rubens, as the official envoy of the Spanish Netherlands. The Treaty of Madrid, signed in the following year, was greeted with scant enthusiasm by England's ally, the Netherlands, and by the English public; and in the Grand Remonstrance of 1641, Charles's opponents took him to task for 'the peace with Spain without consent of Parliament'. There are several editions of the treaty in several languages: Madrid 1630, Lima 1632, Madrid 1660 (all in Spanish - see Palau 43262-4); the English version appeared in two editions printed in London in 1630 (NSTC 9251 & 9251.3); a Dutch version was printed at Utrecht in 1631 (BL. Cat.) and a French version appeared at Brussels in 1660 (Palau 43265). This Portuguese translation is exceptionally rare.
