Author: Goldsmith, Oliver Title: The Deserted Village Illustrated by the Etching Club
Description: New York, D. Appleton and Company, 1857. Hardcover. Octavo; pp; 46, (ii), ads; illustrated with thirty five black and white wood engravings after the etchings of Creswick, Webster, Redgrave, Stonhouse, Cope and others; terra-cotta beveled cloth covered boards decorated and lettered in gilt, all edges gilt. A very nicely illustrated printing of Goldsmith's lament on social change and the destruction of the rural countryside. This copy has a gift inscription "given to Dear Mother", dated 1875 and another bit of holographic adornment, notably an earlier Christmas 1857 gift with "Cousin Eliza" executed in a highly decorative calligraphic style on a preliminary leaf. Moderate wear to the extremities of this very solid binding, light toning to some of the pages, yet a lovely very good copy.
