Thick octavo, tan cloth, gilt, in pictorial jacket. 664, (4)pp. with index, appendices and glossary. Illustrated with photos, diagrams and folding maps, primarily in black and white. The full-page illustrations, genealogical tables and maps are unpaginated, and are in addition to the text. There are 8 large folding maps and 6 folding genealogical tables. There are numerous photographic plates and views, and illustrations in the text. The book and maps are very good with no tears. There is a tiny spot on the fore-edge. A bookseller's tag is on the front free-endpaper. The jacket is very good with a small amount of edgewear. Incredible detail, historical and social from an Englishman born in Syria where his father was the British consul. He spoke Arabic, was close to iinfluential tribe members, and gained insight into the daily lives of the people. According to Freya Stark, "It does for the Arabs of Northern Neid and Southern Syria and Iraq what Mr. G. W. Murray's book did for the dwellers of Egypt; it is equally conscientious, detailed and authoritative and indespensible to all who wish to travel or live in these regions: it is indeed even more complete, because of the careful and accurate drawings with which Mrs. Dickson has filled in the details of the everyday life in the tents.. the actual facts it gives and the care taken to make them accurate and complete, will make it indispensable to specialists. Very good/very good.
