Albumen print 8 x 6 inches on original card mount 8 1/2 x 6 1/4. Ca. 1869. Minor wear to corner of mount, else fine and sharp. Shows two tipis, with an Omaha woman, probably Gi-He-Ga's wife, standing next to one and holding a baby. Ex-Amon Carter Museum with small stamp on verso. This image is illustrated in Newhall & Edkins, p. 43, and also in Bush & Mitchell, pl. 29. According to Newhall & Edkins, in summer 1868, William Henry Jackson, then living in Omaha, "toured the countryside for three months...visiting and photographing the Pawnee, Otoes, Omahas, Winnebagoes, Poncas, and Osages. Many of the photographs were the first ever made of these Indian tribes." This image is also listed in Jackson's _Descriptive Catalogue of Photographs of North American Indians_ (1877), p. 53 and Gi-He-Ga is described as "One of the nine chiefs who govern the tribe, holding their positions by hereditary descent."
