Ambrotype portrait from a painting of Baron Cuvier (1769-1832), the renowned late 18th - early 19th century French scientist.
ca. 1860s. Oval image, 2 1/2 x 2 1/8 inches on ornate copper inner frame surmounted by original wood frame 4 1/2 x 4, with brass hanging loop at top. Portrait is fine and sharp, some discoloration to frames. With fragments of handwritten label, "(Cu)vier."
