Platinum print, portrait of an elderly woman, signed in pencil on mat, "Strauss, 1901, K.C." 6 x 4 " on mat, 11 x 8. Mat lightly soiled, corner chipped. Print fine. Three-quarter length portrait of white-haired woman in floral dress, wire-rimmed glasses, seated diagonally to camera, black background. Julius C. Strauss of St. Louis was one of the pioneers of the "new portraiture," akin to pictorialism, of the late 1890s. According to Welling (p. 389-93), Strauss first exhibited the new portraiture in 1898 at the National Academy of Design, along with Gertrude Kasebier, F. Holland Day, Eva Watson Schutze, and others. The new school favored platinum paper and strove for a "pictorial" or "painter-like" effect to give more feeling & character. On Strauss, see also Gernsheim, _Creative Photography_, p. 133 & pl. 123; Witkin & London list him as a pictorialist (p. 214).
